The Umami.Life™ Artist Studio Series features works that celebrate the human spirit of beauty, passion and dreams reproduced in wearable art and gift items.
Inspirational rising star regional artists are a part of everyday life with the Umami.Life™ Artist Studio Series of apparel and gift items. San Antonio native David Anthony Garcia is the first artist in this series. Garcia’s artwork revolves around the idea of integration — merging various styles and mediums into one composition in order to create extraordinary depth and a unified, harmonious work. Having majored in ceramics as an undergraduate, he often incorporates dimensional elements into his paintings, giving a sculptural feel to the work.
The artwork in this series begins with ceramic masks that Garcia casts from molds that he makes of models’ faces. The masks are then mounted on canvas and he paints a design over the mask and canvas. His models include friends, family and members of the local community — anyone willing to sit still for the casting session.
“The coupling of styles from meticulous detail to freewheeling spontaneity typifies the notion of how we are a reflection of one another and can coexist in the same realm.” ~ David Anthony Garcia
Garcia works full-time as an art educator in a public school. He was a featured artist at the McNay Museum of Art for their 60th anniversary show. He was one of six such artists, each of whom was given a full gallery space in the contemporary wing. His artwork has been shown at venues throughout the San Antonio gallery scene including: Blue Star, Parchman Stremmel, Aviart, Anarte and others.
